Summary of the Website: This website had a variety of subjects. Each subject had different types of things to do, such as games, books, comics, Mad Libs, and puzzles. Each activity has different levels so anyone can enjoy playing. The background is blue with tabs on top that are different subjects. Also there is an arcade, all games, books & comics, and more fun section on the homepage. There is even a teachers and parents section. Summary of the Game: Grammar Gorillas can be played at either Beginner or Advanced. At the Beginner level you are given a sentence and it asks you to either click on the noun or the verb. Two words out of the sentence are bold and you have to pick which one you think is the correct answer. There is a box that says how many you have answered correct and incorrect. At the bottom of the page there is a help section that defines the different parts of speech. Also included is a captain that says “You’re Right!” and the number of correct answers you have there is a corresponding number of bananas. When you answer the question incorrectly it gives you the correct answer and says why your answer was incorrect. At the Advanced level you are given multiple words that are bold that you choose from and it also asks not only for the noun or verb, but for all different types of speech. Evaluation of the Game: I thought the website was a great website for children. It is easy to navigate and has many different things to offer. I liked that this game, along with every other activity on the website, has different levels that the game can be played at. This is good because then students set a goal to get to the next level causing them to work harder. They are building up to something and they challenge themselves. The game I chose is a great way to help children understand different parts of a sentence. I liked that the definitions of the parts of speech were included. The gorillas and bananas are a great way to keep the child entertained. Color: The website is extremely colorful and has a blue background. Each question the gorilla changes color, which will help children stay entertained. Also the bottom tabs are orange and the tabs at the top are pictures of different animals or people and they are very colorful. Summary of the Website: This website has so much for kids to do. There is a page for all the different shows that play on PBS. The colors that are used are very vibrant and bright. Whenever you scroll over something the word is read to you. Also the icons are animated and begin to move when you scroll over them. Navigating on this website is very simple. All a child has to do is click on a character and he/she is brought to the page of that character. All the different pages have games and activities that are designed for the child’s learning and enjoyment. Summary of the Game: Pig’s Perfect Pizza is a great game for children to learn new words and also the spelling of those words. The directions are given verbally to the child. The object of the game is to make different types of pizza by putting toppings on a pizza that all start with the same letter. A list of words scrolls across the screen and you have to choose the words that begin with the correct letter that the pig said. When you scroll over the words they are read aloud. When you see the correct word you click it and then the word is repeated twice and then put onto the pizza. Evaluation of the Game: This game is an excellent game for children who are beginning to read and write. It is child friendly because all directions are read aloud. The animation that this game uses is very exciting and keeps the child enthused. This is a game that does not get boring for children because new words are constantly being used. The speed that the words scroll across can be controlled by the child, which is great because everyone reads at a different speed. This game is a great way for children to learn new words because so many different words are being exposed to them. Another fun aspect of this game is that some of the toppings for the pizzas are silly things that normally do not go on pizza, let alone get eaten. Children will really like the silliness of the game. Color: The website is incredibly colorful that there is hardly any white on it. The main page has a purple sky and green grass. Then there is the traditional green PBS Kids logo and all different characters that are also very colorful. The game’s background is blue with the title Word World, which has each letter having a different color. Repetition: There is not much repetition in this game. However, if all the words scroll across and the child does not pick a word, the words scroll across. The words will scroll across as many times as needed for the child to find the correct word. Talking Text: All of the text is read aloud when scrolled over. Directions are only read aloud. There are no words to be read by the child.
